Jersey Boys on Broadway
If you’re visiting New York City, one of the top tourist activities is to see a musical on Broadway. There are so many choices that it can be tough to pick the right one. Some of this comes down to personal preference: if you like drama or comedy, or your tastes are between something traditional or modern. One of the best options if you’re looking for a great story with local flavor and one that has received critical acclaim is Jersey Boys.
Jersey Boys is the story of the 1960’s rock group, The Four Seasons. This group was historically significant, being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1990. The musical focuses on their climb to the top from humble beginnings and the many conflicts within the group over money, relationships, and ego. A big reason why the show is great for tourists is that the story is very local: The Four Seasons started in Newark, New Jersey, a short distance from Broadway in Manhattan.
Plot and location aside, Jersey Boys has been acclaimed by critics. They have noted the show is especially popular with those who grew up at the height of The Four Seasons’ popularity. But Jersey Boys has plenty of crossover appeal. In 2006, it won the Tony Award for Best Musical. In 2007, it won the Grammy for Best Musical Show Album. It has been performed all over the world, including Las Vegas, Sydney, the United Kingdom, and Tokyo. But Broadway is still the best place to see it!
