Bollywood Heroines Breaking Stereotypes
Time was when Bollywood heroines would be about sugar and spice and all things nice, exuding clichés in everything from their style of dressing to their mannerisms to the dialogues they delivered. Think damsel in distress, whimpering, as her dream lover beats the baddies to pulp in an attempt to rescue her.
Times, fortunately, have changed. Although most of us would still have a nostalgic sign or two while watching an eighties Bollywood film with its inappropriately make-up, delicate darling of a heroine in whose mouth butter wouldn’t melt, we would be relieved to return to the present.
Let’s face it! It was nice to sing along Gazab ka hai din with an innocent-looking Juhi Chawla as she romanced a then-baby-faced Aamir Khan inQayamat Se Qayamat Tak. But given half a chance, most of us would prefer to return to a cranky, idiosyncratic Deepika Padukone as she deals with her equally cranky father’s digestive problems in Piku. Not only does the lead character Piku (Padukone) not take any nonsense from the males of the species (except, perhaps, her father), she interacts with them on entirely her own terms. Agreed, Piku is an exception even by current standards.
Second heroin that comes in our mind in this league is Kangana Ranawat, who is of course the one who is keep experimenting in her onscreen image starting from movies like Gangster to the last one that is Queen. We can easily find out the versatility in her roles which is not very common in the other Bollywood heroines.
Other big example of heroin breaking the stereotype image of the Bollywood actress is non-other than the Vidya Balan who always keeps n experimenting with her roles and over-all appearance in each of her movies.
These are only a couple of examples. But the writing on the screen is that the Bollywood heroine is changing. And how! You had better think twice before you catch the next Bollywood blockbuster hoping to see a pliant and submissive little doll of a woman. Chances are, in these times, she’ll blow your mind.
